But please dont forget to mention the online-shop for UIT-target rifle shooters Shooters-Shop http://www.shooters-shop.com when you recommend possible alternatives. Sincerely Magnus Salomonsson [Editor - I apologize. I can only recommend those whom I've dealt with before, which are obviously in the US. For those in Europe, Shooters Shop may well be a worthy alternative to your normal outlets.] ******************************************************************** Micheal, Bob Mallet writes about bullet catchers for pistol. My Club, Wainuiomata, (pronounced Why-newy-o-marta) got involved with testing designs of bullet catchers. Smallbore rifle but I reckon it could be enlarged for pistol. We set up a rig that was able to alter the slope of the catching steel. We found that once the angle got to greater than 53 degrees from the vertical (ie shallower than 45 degrees), the bullet stayed in one piece. Flattened but in one piece. This has resulted in less dust and easier lead pickup. We rolled a tube about 125mm in diameter and left a 20mm slot in it. The back edge of the slot was welded to the sloping catcher part. We made a scoop that was the same shape as the pipe and use that to scrape the lead out. A refinement is to put a slot in the bottom of the roll and offset the bottom front edge so that a bullet would rotate around the pipe and miss the edge but once it settled in the bottom, it would fall out though the slot. One good thing about the slope is that the pitting that occurs especially around the sighter hole has not occurred. I think this is because the bullet is glancing onto the steel, not hitting it. Hopefully the idea is conveyed with this below. For clarity the x's should all be vertically aligned, hopefully that will give the drawing a datum. x o x o x o x o x o x o Original design x o o x o o x o o x o o x o o x o x o x o x o x o Modified design with slot in bottom x o x o x o o o x o o x o o x o o o x o The curves are circular. Has anyone done a comparison of scores and performance with the older, normal length barrels and the use of the shorter barrels with the sight extensions? If so, could you please post the differences, or send your thoughts to me? I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks, Don Williams, Oregon [Editor - the short 2000 barrel with the STANDARD tube extension should have about the same sight radius as the long barrel. I have asked this before as well, and there seems to be no statistical difference. It was fairly evenly split at the 98 Atlanta WC. Using a tube that increases the sight radius a 4-8 inches more may help in prone but the scores still haven't gone up really. It can keep a pair of older eyes competitive longer perhaps. I think it's mostly a mental thing. The couple more 600s we've seen in the last few years are due to superior mental skills IMHO.] ******************************************************************** I got a nice note from Marie Alkire of the US Women's Intl Rifle Organization. She writes that they will publish Dialogues I (the first book) in a limited amount, avail in a few weeks, priced at US$ 20 (incl shipping). Thanks! Cherrie Pinpin Philippines [Editor - I don't know any. If he can't find any listed in the phone books, he should call the NRA and USA Shooting and find out who holds those kind of matches in his area. They should be glad to help.] ******************************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #5 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
