German Salazar gasalazar@att.net ******************************************************************** Recycling Rifles Reference our last mailing list I would like to say to Ron welcome back and believe or not just a few months ago I was in the same situation as he is with the same type of rifle. After coaching for many years I wanted to get back to my roots and seriously compete again. On the other hand I wasn't sure if I still had the old flame and didn't want to pay a fortune for an investment that might be extinguish. A retired coach of mind gave me an old Model 52 which he shot prone with. I also got a hold of a late 1970 (I believe) Model 1913 Anschutz stock and proceeded to produce a hybrid 3P rifle. Since then both barrel/ receiver and stock are doing well and accurate enough for my level of shooting which is getting back to the basics. My idea was that if my desire hadn't burned out and once I felt my ability would surpass the quality of the rifle then spending a fortune would be the next logical step. Especially, if I wanted to compete at higher levels. With that in mind I've been asking myself a question. I am 46 years of age and in relative good shape. Am I to old to be thinking of make it to the olympics? Don't be shy. As for Ron, go for it! Take care and thanks! J.L.C. [Editor - per your Olympic aspirations, I don't think anyone is too old provided they can get in position OK. Eyes can be corrected for. Though I'm sure there are others, the oldest active world class 3P shooter I know of is Harald Stenvaag, who I think is about 45 now. The real issue here is time (and maybe money). I'm guessing you aren't in the military. To put it into perspective, the top juniors and the AMU practice 5-6 days a week. If you are single (or have an extremely understanding wife) and a flexible job, you may be able to come close to that. Keep in mind only the top 2 people at the trials make it on the team too. To have any chance, I would keep it simple and specialize in prone only. My original goal was the Olympics. But I soon got married and then had a son and wasn't willing to sacrifice the time from my family. I am nowhere near good enough to even come close but I barely get time to practice. I am still going to the trials in a few weeks (hopefully I CAN practice these next few weeks) just to say I went though. You still have to have fun!] ******************************************************************** Dear Michael I'm a ISSF shooting and use a Feinwerkbau Super Match 2602 Alu Stock, Anschutz Super Air 2002 Alu stock and CURT shooting simulator. I want a plan of serious training for air rifle. At the moment I train carrying out complete match of 60 shots (and counting the points at the end of the training), and for what I was talking with other shooters this is not an appropriate way to train. Best regards Osvaldo Paez Rosario Argentina [Editor - I wouldn't worry about your score, but your performance overall. Are you executing all the fundamentals correctly? You perhaps should work on several smaller goals for several days like balance and trigger control. Try shooting without your trousers, boots, or jacket. Dryfire on blank paper - with your CURT system you should be able to easily see how much movement you have. All of those should amplify position problems. I don't think there isn't anything wrong with shooting 60 shot matches all the time as practice though I would suggest shooting 80 shot matches instead to build up your endurance.] ******************************************************************** I wish to poll the UIT Mailing List membership about the HW-660 rifle. The price seems right. Does anyone have comments about the accuracy, quality of manufacture, and ergonomics of this rifle? Alan Carey [Editor - they are probably suitable for serious local or state competition. The only thing I know is not to dry fire them without an empty case in the chamber as the firing pin is likely to break.] ******************************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #17 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
