Re: Eley ammo Stuff for Sale list ******************************************************************** Michael: I have not seen one of the new aluminum stocks apart yet. Is there metal to metal contact with the receiver? If so, this might explain the differences in zero changes during lulls in firing. The stock might be acting as one big heat sink. A few years back (20 or so), a friend of mine, Frank Davey made long range rifles with an aluminum block that acted as a type of pillar bed as well as a heat sink. It had a couple of tubes that led from the sink/bedding into each side of the stock and they acted as cooling vents. Those rifles were extremely accurate but never marketed as he just built them for friends. Thanks for putting this thing on. I look forward to each of your mailings. Hope all is well. [Editor - now that is an interesting theory. Perhaps the post below about cooking ammo adds to that since I thought most benchrest shooters have metal bases or essentially "stockless" rifles.] ******************************************************************** Melissa Susan Mulloy wrote: > HI, I thought you would want to know that Dan was in a rock climbing > accident of ofthe Elliot highway last weekend. If there's a will, there's a way - there's the Stokes Mandeville Games, where one can shoot AR from a wheelchair. Nothing will stop a disabled person if he wants to achieve it. I know that, because I still shoot despite being disabled (and always forget that fact most of the time). My prayers to Dan that he keeps the will to live and fight once more... Cherrie [Editor - and, of course, the Paralympics. Hopefully Dan is the type to recover quickly and get on with the rest of his life as best he can.] ****************************************************************** I am a 3 postion rimfire shooter in winter leagues and some outdoor. But mostly I shoot rimfire benchrest at 50 yards outdoors. Cooking rimfire ammo has been bantered around in our game too. I shoot ARA currently. We shoot 25 shots plus foulers and sighters in 20 minutes. Thats to give you an idea of our rate of fire. Cooking/barrel temp (how much of which is a culpret?) is usually not of concern unless a gun has sat for a minute or more. Then the round is not extracted but fired off the target to maintain barrel temp. Even with the best barrel well stressed, temperature variation can have minor effects. So I guess my comment is don't extract the round but go ahead and fire it off the target if rules permit. But personally I think most barrels the effect is trivial for position shooting. But it is something each shooter should test from their gun. Put it in a rest shoot rapidly then wait one minute and see what happens to the shot. Shoot rapidly then wait 30 seconds etc. and know for yourself what happens to your barrel/ ammo combination. Do this in an indoor range or good conditions outdoors. And use windflags if outdoors. Place at 10, 20 and 30 yards or whatever works for your range. Shooting from a rest using lots of flags shows that slight wind changes can move a 22 around more than the cooked round in most guns. But .22's seem to each have a mind of their own. Rich ****************************************************************** Dear Mike. Do you or any of the list members have any thoughts/impressions on SK .22 LR or Short ammunition. It seems to be the flavor of the month sown here in OZ amongst pistol shooters. I find it mild to shoot but it is still a little on the fast side, it groups ok but not great in my pistol. ERNEST [Editor - I've not heard of an SK brand of ammo. Anyone else???] ****************************************************************** Dear Michael. In Australia we have noticed that Eley ammunition has not been up to its usual standard.
