These are our slate of matches and deadlines for shooting. Details about registration, fees and rules can be found on our web site: http://www.cs.mun/~mrt 1.Deadline Feburary 28, 1999 (Indoor Free-rifle Prone and Sporting rifle Prone) 2.Deadline March 21, 1999 (Air Rifle Air Pistol) 3.Deadline April 2, 1999 (Indoor Free-rifle and Sporting rifle) 4.Deadline July 11, 1999 (50 m Free-rifle and Sporting rifle) 5.Deadline September 28, 1999 (50 m Free-rifle and Sporting rifle) 6.Deadline October 28, 1999 (Indoor Free-rifle and Sporting rifle) 7.Deadline November 28, 1999 (Air Rifle Air Pistol) ****************************************************************** A quick two questions - is the olympic Rapid Fire discipline .22 Short only ? What discipline(s) uses/allows .22 LR pistols such as the Hämmerli 280 or 208 in either Olympic or other UIT matches ? [Editor - the only events that must use .22LR is sport and standard pistol. Free and RF can use any .22 rimfire ammo if desired. The short is used for RF because of the reduced recoil I would guess.] ****************************************************************** I would just like for you to announce that the 1998-99 NCAA Rifle Championships are being held at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, this year. Guests are welcome to attend and support the best collegiate shooters in the nation from March 9-13. For directions to the Norwich Campus consult the Norwich webpage at (www.norwich.edu) Bryan Barney Norwich University Rifle Team Class of '99 ****************************************************************** Rifle and pistol stocks being made of wood have suffered from unknowing shooters the world over. The shooters have put Gun Oil on the wood to they thought preserve it from wood worms and the like. The one item they were unaware of was that oil of the wrong type (pet oil) attack the silicone of the wood and make the wood soft. Wood saturated with oil is soft and flexible. For high power shooting the wood stock will not hold the receiver group in a satisfactory manner and the shooting groups expand. The answer seemed to be apply something that would stiffen and reinforce the stocks. While many things were tried with mixed results, fiber glass was finally used to stabilize the stock mounting areas of the stock. Before I mentioned high power, and this is where the most problem was found because of the high PSI levels achieved in the chamber and barrel areas. For rimfire the problem is not as great and may not even be required by the shooter. However, the stock can be reinforced and the accuracy improved by installing glass bedding for the competition rifle. Such glass bedding will improve both high power and rimfire competition rifles shooting accuracy. Major improvements can be found when used with sound wood stocks not damaged by applications of Oil to the stock. The wood stock is prepared by removing small amounts of wood from the inside of the stock in the bedding area. Then fiber glass prepared and placed in the bedding area of the stock. Then the receiver group placed in the stock until the fiber glass has dried or hardened. Care must be taken that the barrel is not included in the bedding Fiberglas. The barrel must float free with out restriction so to allow the vibrations to move up and down of the barrel freely. Again Oil can ruin the process if placed on the fiberglass after hardening. This is a very simple explanation of the process and any shooter attempting this process must read the manufactures instructions and follow them to the letter. Accuracy work is a lot of fun and very rewarding when the shooter finds the shots in the center on every shot but accuracy work is best accomplished by a trained and experienced gunsmith. It must be acknowledged that if the shooter used poor technique there is no accuracy work that can improve shooters poor technique. Good Shooting Chet Skinner, Coach cskinner@dol.net ****************************************************************** As I listen to all the conversations relating to ammo selection I am begining to wonder if there really is good ammo out there for us non-connected shooters. I have become very good and serious relating to this olympic smallbore prone rifle shooting, and would ask anyone's advice on the best way to secure good ammo that will hold the 10m ring on the 50 meter UIT target. My scores are averaging just at 590/600 Any help would be most appreciated Terry tglenn@ny.tds.net [Editor - most of the major outlets for ISSF equipment in the US should allow you to test brands and lots, with the understanding that you'll buy at least a case of the lot that shoots the best. I saw in the Accuracy Int'l catalog this weekend that he will send you 100 rounds of various lots to test. You still have to buy the test rounds, of course.] ****************************************************************** Can you help, have just taken up .22 free\standard pistol, looking for a Pachmayr 2/3 pistol case (second hand) would do, anyone in the U.K. have one for sale, if not anyone in U.S. willing to pack and send one across the water to the Channel Islands U.K. or can you let me know of any U.S.company that will deal mail order. regards, Bob Mallet. ramallet@super.net.uk ****************************************************************** One of our shooters is looking for a free pistol. He is a rather good air pistol shooter and is looking forward to start shooting in the free pistol event. As there are not that much free pistol shooters in Belgium, it is dificult to find 'users' information about the advantages and disadvantages of the different free pistols. Can someone explain the difference between the TOZ 35 and the TOZ 55 free pistol ? Who has experience with the Hammerli Mod 160 and Mod 160 Spezial and with the Morini CM 84E free pistols. What are the differences between these 5 pistols ? Thanks, Tom De Ruyck - Belgium tomdr@bigfoot.com [Editor - he should talk to his fellow shooters at the major matches he goes to. Many air pistol shooters also do free. The season is just starting and there are lots of matches in Europe. I heard this weekend that TOZ haven't been made in a while which may make parts scarce.] ****************************************************************** The address for GEMINI is: SN(UK) Ltd. 26, The Craft Centre, Storridge Road, Westbury, Wiltshire, BA13 4HU, England phone/fax 01373 825853 Anschutz now has a compressor for filling compressed air bottles. Model for 220 volts & one 2-stroke model. They seperate the condensed water BUT ARE NOT SUITABLE for inhaled air, e.g. diving. The Feinwerkbau 2602 now comes in an aluminum stock with the added feature of 'cast off'. That is, it has an articulated stock. regards Bill ****************************************************************** Re: barrel weights I'd be interested in the answer to this too. I seem to recall reading in Neil Johnson's catalogue that there had been experiments done on the positioning of weights and having them above the plane of the barrel improved the consistency / control of recoil. In my own case I stuck with the weights I had which were the old Anschutz below the barrel type, which I mounted pretty much as close to the barrel as was practical. I agree that it is aesthetically better, and I think that in terms of helping hold/balance (i.e. before the recoil phase) below the barrel must be better - although arguably the lower the better. ****************************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #19 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
