Several of the members are very serious collectors and can probably help him. Thanks for the work doing the UIT list. It's great. (Written by a smallbore shooter) Back Issues are available for about $3. Precision Shooting has a web site that is hosted by Shooters.com. Contact them for back issues. ****************************************************************** In regards to the question of available monies. This does not regard the CMP as to my understanding congress mandated that they become a more of not completely self supporting organization. I believe offer grants to affiliated clubs for Youth programs, public safety, wildlife and natrual resource conservation, education, constitutional research, and I think range improvements. There are catches, (such as no deficity financing, policitcal candidates or organizations, lobbying, or religious organizations) but for the most part I think they are reasonable. Also the Freinds of the NRA program in each state also has money to dole out to certain programs. (I don't know if this is the same program or not) I don't think they are incredably large sums, but any help is better than none. To inquire I believe you contact NRA's grant administrator for the aforementioned NRA foundation help, and to a field rep. for the friends of the NRA programs. A few years ago, I got this information from Sandy Elkin on the foundation grants, and recently received another copy of it that was dated march of '95. David Lee [Editor - still no mention on the Wolf Creek site or in the JSCN/WCF newsletter. CMP is sponsoring many camps at WC, but they aren't free.] ****************************************************************** Re: The laser eye surgery. I'm a rifle coach (Level 3) & shooter and I had lent a fellow shooter a few self-help books on correcting eyesight. She returned them a month ago with the news that she had laser (LASIK) surgery done. She had tried the exercises in the books but "the only result was some hevy duty headaches". To quote her:" About 8 weeks ago I had the laser (LASIK) surgery. I'm REALLY happy with the results. My shooting eye (which was the bad one: moderate myopia and severe astigmatism; damaged in an accident about 25 years ago) is 20/20. The left eye (astigmatism) is slightly better than 20/25. I don't need glasses at all for any activity. I am thrilled with the results. there has been no sight fluctuation since the first couple of days and the only side effect is dryness, which is being treated with artificial tears. My own eye doctor, who has been doing the follow up care, says this side effect should decrease in severity over time." The lady is in her mid thirties (guess, I never ask a lady her age!) and in good health. She had the best in the biz, the doctor who pioneered the surgery in Canada and has trained most of the others. She mentions that the only drawback is the cost, but "seeing the Milky Way five days after surgery for the first time in 25 years or so, I think it's worth every penny." She is the only shooter of which I am personally aware, although we have had quite a few change from bulky glasses, mostly astigmatism, to the new contacts. I personally tried to get contacts, but am psychologically unable to stuff them into my eye. So I'm stuck with glasees! CES cshort@nfe.com ****************************************************************** Just a general history question that I've always wondered about: Why does Anschutz dominate the sport of target shooting to such a degree? [Editor - my guess is they were first to market and make superior products.] Never having shot another make of target rifle I am perhaps not the right one to be asking this, but in the few years that I've been in the sport, I believe I've only ever seen two or three (maybe four) Walthers, a couple Remingtons, and an absolutely ancient BSA. I've never seen a Feinwerkbau, nor even heard of any one who shoots one. While I realize that Anschutz is the largest producer of brand-name aftermarket products, the majority of them work just as well on a Walther or Feinwerkbau -- or even Winchester -- as an Anschutz, right? I am going to be purchasing a match rifle this spring or summer, and I would like to hear some honest reviews of all the major rifles. I refuse to believe that there isn't someone out there who doesn't swear by their non-Anschutz target rifle (match or sporter). In looking through all the archived newsletters there has been very little discussion of any other target rifles aside from Anschutz. Am I the only one who's interested in other brands of target rifles just for the sake of being different? Jason Jarvis (Who recently finished dead-last in the first match he shot after a six year break!) ;^) Kitchener, ON [Editor - at the end of Vol 2 there was discussion on Walther and one of your countrymen was swearing by his. There are several top shooters in the world using the 'space gun' now. Other than that, I have seen several FWB, and a Unique at the Atlanta WC.] ****************************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #14 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
