My thanks to Anita North for arranging for the results of the Perazzi Classic / British Grand Prix to be faxed to me. I will post the Top 20 on my page next week. In this issue: Re: Rapid fire barrel twist Opinions on Walther rifles? Need contact info for RX Products in UK Is there a market for scoring software? Re: 1907 or 1912? Re: New Walther or Anschutz smallbore? Effects of wind / Simulator and SUIS technology ******************************************************************** I don't know how relevant this may be but the American Rifleman ran an article, years ago by Gene young, regarding the barrel twist in .32 S&W Long. The standard twist is 1:19 " They tried 1:16, 1:12, & 1:10". The 1:10" was best, with the 1:12 a close second. Even the 1:16 improved on the 1:19. There was also precision chambers and crowning of the "new" barrels. The Greenhill formula recommends a 1:14 for .22 rimfire. (150 divided by the length of the bullet in calibres and multiply by the nominal calibre) Apparently Anschutz had done experiments with rifle twist when they brought out the 2000 series, but they found that the 1:16 was overall the best for 50m target shooting. Hope this adds to the info It would be nice to get collated info on this, rather than anecdotal, but who has the deep pockets? ****************************************************************** I enjoy everyones insight, so keep the messages flowing. I just purchased my son a new Walther LG 200 Compressed air rifle while at Camp Perry. Being a fan of FWB but turned off by the prices of the P70's, I was really impressed with the quality of the Walther. I was even more pleased with my purchase decision after seeing (on your page) that the Mens Air Rifle @ the World cup in Barcelona was won with a Walther. Anyone else had any experience with the new Walther compressed air rifle? What about the Walther KK free rifle (aka Space Gun), this is what my son has his sights set on, however I've heard rumblings about quirks with this rifle. Any insights? Paul Becks Sr. & Jr. [Editor - FWIW, Khadzibekov also uses the "space gun" in addition to his LG200 and is in the 3x40 finals often. Bob Foth uses Walther rifles also. He told me they were the best shooting guns he had. Granted, they probably get hand picked ones (Bob mentioned they were provided to top international shooters like him to get the Walther name out to the public prior to the 96 Games), but I see no issues with Walther quality.] ****************************************************************** Does anyone have an address and/or telephone and fax numbers for RX Products (the target equipment manufacturer) in the UK? Thanks, Steve Desrocher ****************************************************************** I thought of developing [scoring & reporting] software (I am a software engineer, mainly windows programming) but decided not to spent the time because the effort is great and I am not sure the reward will be there. What is your feeling about this? Eitan ****************************************************************** It is possible to put a heavy barrel on some stocks to create a UIT Sport Rifle just under 6.5 Kg; but all the women I know that are about 5' 7" and about 125 lbs use lightweight barrels, are happy with them, and feel that a heavy barrel would be too much. I saw Sonia Pfeilschrifter (about that size) and Kirsten Oble (a bit bigger) using 12s just after they came out. They were both German national team at the time. (It was ISAS Dortmund, and Oble shot 592 in the 3x20) Martin Sinclair ****************************************************************** [Editor - 2 others wrote similar responses.] In response to Mark Mullen's inquiry about the Walther KK free rifle, I noticed in Gehmann's most recent catalogue that Walther makes their KK free rifle stock specifically for some of the Anschutz barrelled actions. This may be an alternative to switching outright to a Walther rifle. However, I am not aware of a North American importer of this stock. ****************************************************************** [Editor - this is an excerpt from Vol 1 #21] [Ed. note - many incorrectly believe this to be the Magnus Effect, which deals with the spinning of the bullet and air pressure. However, a professional ballistician wrote a nice rebuttal to this a year ago. He was involved in an extensive study for the USST and discovered that the deflection is actually a 9:30-3:30 line (not an ellipse like you suggest). Also interesting to note is in the graphs provided of actual data done using Eley Tenex that the 6 and 12 winds have virtually no effect on the POI. What I find interesting is that for a 10mph wind, the POI has 5 distinct groups in a line (2/3/4, 1/5, 6/12, 7/11, and 8/9/10) while no groups are present for 20mph. I wonder why that is?] Do you have more information about this subject? [Editor - It came from a back issue of USA Shooting Sports sometime in 96 I think. If you want I can try to find the specific issue.] Did you cover in any of the old issues the principle of operation (from engineering point of view) for: * Shooting Simulators - like the Noptel * Electronic Targets - like the SIUS Thanks, Eitan [Editor - Not that I recall. From what I know of SCATT (I talked with Artem at the World Cup), it operates by using infrared transmitters on the target and the receiver is attached to the barrel, which was the opposite of what I thought it would be. The Suis system uses microphones to detect the sound waves of the passing bullet.] ****************************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #33 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
