In this issue: My thoughts on the Atlanta WC plus results Optics question Want info on barrels How to remove sight block screws? Backup archives back on-line ******************************************************************** Well, I had a great time at the Atlanta world cup. I didn't get to relax much since I had to keep going from range to range to get most of the pictures I was after. Even with all my planning I still missed 2 events because they rescheduled them and didn't get some pictures I wanted or that were requested because the shooter finished early. However I did take 300+ pics and I expect I'll post about 200. This will take another week or two to scan them all so be patient! The results are now on-line as well as summary results from Cairo. I have also updated the world records. Some thoughts: I was disappointed by the lack of female shotgun shooters at Atlanta - less than half the number of Cairo. There were still a couple of the top ones, but I was hoping for more. For the rifle people (like me) out there, the majority of women have converted to the sport rifle and it's equally divided between the 1912 and 2012 (14 each). It's too hard to tell with the men since they use custom barrels and stocks so much, but Anschutz was clearly the main choice (of at least the action) followed by Walther. In air rifle, the women continue to favor FWB and surprisingly most still use pneumatics (6 of 8 in the final). The men were split between FWB and the 2002 and compressed air was used by about half and 5 of 8 were CA in the final. I did get to speak with several list members: - Allan Harry was an RO on the 50m range - Henry Gerow shot prone for CAN with a 592/600 - Fabio Coehlo (BRA) shot a national record during elimination with 1131 and also shot a 581 with a borrowed air rifle. - Willy Lin (BRA) shot running target in only his second competition. - The Robbs (?) hunted me down and even said they took pictures of me taking pictures! - Artem Khadzibekov (RUS) took silver in 3P. He also showed me the new version of the SCATT training system - quite impressive. - and of course, Nick Obee (who provided me the results files) and Dan Durben of USA Shooting. ****************************************************************** Can anyone recommend a good scientific treatment of the optics involved in iron sights ? (It's for UIT smallbore rifle) I'm curious to see something more than "the rearsight should be x cm from the eye", ie explanations of focus, aperture, depth of field, diffraction, etc, but applied to riflery. They have a small clamping piece attached to the screw and a spring in between. I can't just unscrew them all the way out. There is something holding them back. I want to replace the screws as they are worn out. Thanks and have fuN! ****************************************************************** Hi everyone. I would just like to remind everyone that the deadline for submission of scores for the internet match is May 31, 1998. I have finally updated my home page and I have a page devoted to the Internet competitions. I have the results for the last one posted and I have a copy of the match bulletin online if anyone needs a copy of it. In addition, I have the UIT Mailing List archive back online, and a few links that I have collected. If anyone wants to share links with me just drop me a note. The page is still fairly bare bones and I will be working on it again soon. The URL is http://www.cs.mun.ca/~garyp Take care...
