In this issue: Trigger overtravel Lowering natural POA in kneeling Kneeling position / breathing Source for inexpensive UIT jackets needed ********************************************* I have a question for everybody. Is over travel a good thing on a smallbore gun? I shoot a 2013 for 3-p matches and for prone matches. I currently have a good bit of over travel on the trigger, I personally like it that way. I feel that if you don't have that extra bit of room after the shot has gone off you could still mess up the shot. I recently got back from the USA shooting national junior olympic camp out at the training center, and I got a bunch of different answers on this. So I would appreciate any feedback on this topic. Good shooting, Matt Judd [Ed - Does it really affect your ability to have your pointed where it needs to be when you fire the shot? Don't worry about it. If you're actuating the trigger properly, it makes no difference] ********************************************** There are five approaches to the lowering of the natural point of aim in the kneeling position. 1. Move the butt of the rifle higher in the shoulder. It may be necessary to lower the cheekpiece. This is likely to cause a problem with the sight picture. This approach is usually not satisfactory. 2. Use a more upright body position. This means adjusting the position so that the shoulders are farther back toward a location above the kneeling roll. The left elbow (for a right-handed shooter) will be farther back on the left knee or thigh. A higher body position may be less stable than a low body position. 3. Use a bigger kneeling roll. Consult the rule book first. 4. With no other changes to the position, lengthen the sling and move the hand stop forward on the rifle. 5. Move the left foot (for a right-handed shooter) farther forward, with no other changes to the position, so that the left thigh is no longer vertical as seen from the side. This may require good traction between the left foot and the ground, or between the left foot and the shooting mat, in extreme cases. Howard Moody has indicated that this is not a correct shooting position in the extreme cases. Perhaps these approaches will help you to find a solution which will work for you. - Raoul B. Salem *********************************************** FOR NEUSER: Your kneeling position is taking more effort than necessary. The position can be established upon one position and the ten bull target fired from that position. Care must be taken to stay off of the elbow and knee caps. The way to accomplish this is to place the elbow to the right of the knee cap and make bone-to-bone contact with the knee joint. So the left elbow joint is now in contact with the knee joint, the knee cap was pushed to the left out of the way of the position. The elbow cap is positioned infront of the knee joint but be careful of the rules about the elbow being to far in front of the knee. Now about the one position set up. The rules do not state how the target will be placed on the target hanger. Everyone places it in the vertical, however the target can be placed on the horizontal as well and still be legal in competition. In this way the up/down movement will now be about a 1/4 of an inch and the shooter need now worry about laterial movement which is easier to work with. This is a way to work with the ten bull target. Think about it ! FOR PAULA: Breath control is the same for all positions, the shooter breaths in and out normally until the shooter is ready for the one-shot match. The lungs are exhaled until there is no effort to inhale or exhale. The lungs are now ballanced and must remain so for the 2 second period required for the firing timing. Chet Skinner, Coach and Instructor ****************************************************** I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to buy inexpensive jackets for 3p shooting. I need to get a few for the team. The best place I know of is Custom Leather Wear. Korean Marksman used to be another alternative, but the distributor I know says they can't be imported anymore because of some legal/import issue. I want heavy canvas or cordura coats (preferably tailored somewhat - not the generic size 42 or the full blown Thune). Any other options out there in the US? ****************************************************** End of UIT Mailing List #6 Michael Ray - Systems Engineer Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech.
