I'd like to welcome you all to the mailing list. First I apologize for the
huge initial message because of all the recipients. I hope I have solved
that this time. Let's lay down a few guidelines for the list before we
begin. I want to be pretty relaxed so there won't be too many rules and
they will be open for discussion if you have a problem with them.

1. No pure commercial announcements. If you wish to mention a product or
service you offer in the process of answering someone's question, feel free.
If you mention every single time you answer I will probably ask you to stop.
The exception to this that I will allow is your signature file. I would ask
that you limit your sig files to 3 lines if possible (like mine).

2. All questions and answers should be directed to the list keeper, which is
me (topshot@indy.net) at this point in time. I will then compile the
messages I have received (in the order I receive them) every couple days
depending on how many I have and mail them out as one message so this will
be a digest type mailing list.

3. You may answer someone directly if you wish, but I'd prefer that you
don't so your views can benefit everyone. However, if it has nothing to do
with the normal content of the list, then I would encourage a direct reply
to the person.

4. No flames will be allowed.

5. Content: Currently the list will cover anything to do with equipment,
positions, competing, coaching, or otherwise directly related to UIT
shooting events, to include rifle, pistol, shotgun, and running target.

That's about it. Seems pretty simple and painless to me.

I have the first question. I want to know if there's any practical
advantage to the laminated stocks that are popular on match air rifles. I
know they are effected less by temperature and humidity fluctuations, but
why would this have any effect for an air rifle? My Anschutz 2002 (which is
NOT laminated) action basically runs the entire length of the stock and has
a screw at each end. The barrel/sighting apparatus sits on top of that. I
do not see why having the stock change shape would effect performance when
my barrel is isolated from it by the large metal action.

A corollary to this is: why are laminated stocks NOT used much for
smallbore? Is it because people normally bed their actions? If so, why
does just a little fiberglass between the wood and action make much
difference? It would seem stock changes would still alter the tension
against the action, though in a more consistent manner. I think a
fiberglass stock is the way to go for smallbore.

So tell me why a laminated stock is worth the extra money for an air rifle.
Thanks. I need to buy some very soon. Am thinking of the Walther LGM-2.

FYI, there is a new airgun postal series being started. His message appears
below. PLEASE RESPOND DIRECTLY TO HIM, NOT THE LIST!

I'm planning on running these matches every two weeks. The first one
starts on Sunday 8 SEP with all results Emailed to me by 21 Sep. I will
then post the dates for the next match. This is not the normal postal
match. There is no entry fee and you shoot at your own targets and
score them yourself, then email me your score. Full details are on my
homepage
(http//:www.geocities.com/Colosseum/2161/index.htm). There is a
catagory for airpistol and one for air rifle. Standard rules apply.
Please score your target fairly. I initially was not planning on any
type of award but have since decided to award certificates to 1st-3rd in
both pistol and rifle. To register send me the following information:

Name
Pistol, Rifle or both
Model of the airgun you are using
Experience (Novice, Intermediate, Expert, or somewhere in between)
Kind of Pellet (R-10, MK, Hobby ect)
Email address
Any Comments you may have

Scores will be posted on my homepage at the end of the match. I will
then contact the winners to get the postal address so I can send out the
certificates, by the way my wife is designing and printing the
certificates for the matches.

I will also keep track of all the scores for all of my matches and post
a running average for each shooter. Then later this winter I will
conduct a handicaped match complete with entry fee and trophies. Please
remember I am only one person and am doing this simply because I love
shooting airguns and like getting involved with things. I am not
looking to make money.

Thanks for your interest and look forward to receiving your entry.

Good Shooting,

Mike Koratich

FYI, another mailing list is starting for pistol bullseye shooting. While
not UIT, I know there are many pistol people on the list so am passing this
on if they are interested. Subscription instructions are included in his
message.

Attention Bulleye Pistol Shooters:

A new mailing list, bullseye-l, has been created that is designed to
cater
to our specific needs and interests. We will be discussing such things as
load data, custom guns, technique tips, rules & regulations, club & match
contact information, etc., and the limited advertising of
bullseye-specific
items will also be permitted so long as it doesn't get out of hand.
Mostly,
it is hoped that the forum will allow us to widen our circle of bullseye
enthusiast friends beyond current geographical and/or logistical
limitations.

In regards to my earlier posts in rec.guns, I apologize for not getting
the
list online sooner. There was a technical problem that my ISP was unable
to
debug, and we ultimately had to reinstall the whole thing. We've been
testing the new setup for a few days and everything seems to be working
perfectly. [Special thanks to my new friend Geoff Beneze for his patience
and willingness to help me out through the entire setup process!]

Here are the subscription instructions:

1. send email to: bullseye-l-request@lava.net
2. in the subject field, enter: subscribe

After subscribing, you should receive an automated welcome message that
confirms your subscription, provides instructions for posting messages and
replies to the list, and lays forth the few ground rules for bullseye-l.

I have also created a home page for bullseye-l that provides additional
information and allows you to subscribe straight from the page. Here's
the URL:

http://www.lava.net/~perrone/bullseye

A digest version of the list is also available; more information on this
appears on the home page and in the automated welcome message you will
receive after subscribing.

I expect membership to be up to approximately 50 people within the next
week
or so, and many more will probably subscribe after the home page has been
registered with the search engines and links have been added by many of
the
larger shooting-related web sites.

This should be fun! I look forward to meeting you on bullseye-l.
