Trinity dominates first Irish Air Rifle Intervarsities The first Irish Air Rifle Intervarsity was held this sunday in Wilkinstown, Co. Meath - neutral territory for both Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The event had been eagerly anticipated by both rifle clubs, with squads in training for six months in both physical training and technical training. On the day, however, Trinity dominated in both the Senior and Junior categories. As expected, both captains Steven Watterson of Trinity and Denise O'Brien of UCD posted high scores, the two highest of the competition in fact. However, UCD's seniors posted a total team score of 2496 to Trinity's 2715, and their juniors posted a score of 1920 to Trinity's 2504: getting soundly trounced in both categories. UCD Captain Denise O'Brien, however, promised that "next year will be UCD's year". Notable mentions from the teams included UCD's Jessica McArdle who set a personal best while leading the UCD Junior team and Trinity's Deirdre Ninaber who posted a phenonomenal 545 in only her second air rifle competition - a score that most shooters take years to achieve.
